Miles has previously served at Ruby Elementary as the Literacy Coach since 2013. Prior to that position, Miles has also served in various other roles at the school since 2010. Before coming to Ruby Elementary, she was a teacher at Edwards Elementary School in Chesterfield for ten years.
Miles graduated from Chesterfield High School in 1996. After graduating, she attended Wingate University and in 2000 she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. In 2004 she received her Masters Degree in Instructional Accommodations from Francis Marion University, followed by her South Carolina Certification in Educational Leadership from Winthrop University in 2005.
According to Dr. Harrison Goodwin, Superintendent of the Chesterfield County School District, Miles has been an integral part of the drive to success at Ruby Elementary.
“She has been part of a very successful team and she is prepared to now lead that team to future success,” he says.
King, who has been the assistant principal at Long Middle School since 2011, has served in Chesterfield County School District since 2002. He has also served as a math teacher at McBee High School and Cheraw High School. While at Long Middle, King played a significant leadership role in ensuring a successful transition of incoming sixth grade students from Cheraw Intermediate School.
In 2002, King earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from the University in South Carolina. He also earned his Master of Arts Degree in Educational Leadership from Cambridge College in 2011. He is also certified to serve as a principal in the state of South Carolina.
Goodwin said that King is truly a student-centered educator who believes in leading by example.
“His passion for seeing that all students succeed will be obvious to the entire Jefferson community,” he adds.
Sorrow comes to Long Middle from Lancaster County. Since 2009, she has been a middle school assistant principal. As an assistant principal at Indian Land Middle School, and then at Andrew Jackson Middle School, her schools were recognized as a S.C. Red Carpet schools, as well as being a part of Making Middle Grades Work and Schools To Watch. Through her collaboration with other educators, her schools were also awarded the Arts in Basic Curriculum Grant, Distinguished Arts Program Grant, and Teacher’s Pet Grant.
Sorrow earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics from Winthrop University in 1991. She continued at Winthrop University and earned a Master of Education Degree in Middle Level Education in 2002. Mrs. Sorrow furthered her education and earned a Master of Education Degree in Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina in 2009.
“Mrs. Sorrow brings a wealth of experience working in successful middle school settings with her to her new role as principal,” says Goodwin. “Her energy and drive to be successful will allow her to work with the dedicated faculty of Long Middle School to continue their move forward academically.”
