District welcomes new teachers

The superintendent, Dr. Harrison Goodwin, opened the meeting by asking three questions:  • What do you teach?• Why do you teach?, and • Who do you teach?  He emphasized that the response to all three questions should be “students.”  We teach students first and then our subject matter or content.  Dr. Goodwin introduced the District Administrators to the new teachers and then had the teachers introduce themselves to the group.  At that time, each teacher was presented a Chesterfield County School District lapel pin that displayed the district’s motto, “Excellence in Academics, Arts, and Athletics.”   He reminded the group that as school district employees, we need to be “unified, dedicated and working together to benefit all the students in Chesterfield County.”In addition, he shared 8 qualities that an effective teacher should possess.  They are passion, compassion, love, enthusiasm, dedication, collaboration, and professionalism.  The eighth trait he discussed was serving as a dream maker for students.  He reminded teachers that it is important to know your students and provide any resources available to help them succeed.  He stated, “When you are just surviving, you cannot dream.”  Therefore, it is the educator’s responsibility to do everything possible to guide students on the pathway to achieving their dream.  Other topics covered at the orientation included curriculum, student services, technology, personnel, certification, and the ADEPT process.  A delicious lunch was enjoyed by the group and allowed a time for administrators and educators to share information and get acquainted.  The meal was sponsored by Founders Federal Credit Union.
