District announces make up days

During the recent weather events, Chesterfield County School District was closed for seven days. While we know there are many differing opinions on making those days up and there are many factors to be considered, South Carolina has a well-defined statute regarding missed days and the rules for making those days up.

The law prescribes the following:

The first 3 days missed must be made up. The next 3 days the local Board of Trustees can either schedule for make-up or they may forgive any or all of the 3 days. Days 7 through 9 the local board may require the district to make up or they may pass a resolution appealing to the State Board of Education asking that the days be forgiven. There are no exceptions for natural disasters or states of emergency.

The Chesterfield County School Board has voted to accept the recommendation of the administration on a make-up plan.

The following four dates will be scheduled for makeup:

January 3, January 4, February 18 and March 22.

Monday, May 27 (Memorial Day) schools will be closed.

The additional three days that have been missed have been forgiven by the Board of Trustees.

If there are any additional days missed during the course of the year, the Board of Trustees will have to consider them on a case by case basis.
