A Message from the Superintendent

Dear Chesterfield County School Family,
As we prepare for a winter storm over the weekend, I would like to provide you with some information in preparation for the possible impact the storm may have on the operation of Chesterfield County School District next week. Making a weather-related call is always one of the hardest decisions because of the impact it can have on student learning and families, but please know student and staff safety is at the core of every decision.
When planning on the safe operation of schools due to severe weather, the director of operations and other district employees check weather and road conditions in the county. The director of operations communicates with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), National Weather Service, Chesterfield County Sheriff’s office, Chesterfield Emergency Management, and neighboring school operation’s departments. School personnel drive school bus routes to assess the conditions of the roads. Our weather decision-making process involves checking road conditions, ambient air temperature checks, and visual checks.
When a call is made that affects the operation of the school district, we will utilize many media outlets to help keep you informed. Parents can expect a phone call and an email notifying you of any schedule changes. Information will also be posted on our websites and social media sites. School status information can also be found by tuning in to your local broadcast media. A call concerning operational status of Chesterfield County School District for Monday, January 26, 2026, will be made Sunday, January 25, 2026, by 6:00 p.m.
In the event it is unsafe to place students and staff on the road next week, we are preparing for three (3) eLearning days. Today, Friday, January 23, 2026, your child will be provided information on assignments, how to access assignments, and expectations. Teachers will be available for support via email between the hours of 9:00 – 11:00 and 12:00 – 2:00 each day that we are utilizing an eLearning day. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns.
We will also be sending home meals for three days. Our cafeteria and school staff will be providing meal boxes to all students at dismissal today, January 23, 2026. If you have any questions or concerns about meals, please reach out to your child’s principal.
Please be safe and continue to monitor for school and weather updates.
Respectfully,
Christopher L. Ballenger, Ed.D.
Superintendent
