Bus Driver Information

ITEMS NECESSARY IF YOU LIVE IN ANOTHER COUNTY IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND WANT TO SUB FOR A SCHOOL IN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY.

1.  CDL License. --"B" License with a PS rating.

2.  A current South Carolina Permit. (Blue)

3,  A current physical.

4.  Proof of a recent drug test as required

by Chesterfield County Schools.

"ALL THIS INFORMATION MUST BE ON FILE IN THE TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT IN  RUBY, SOUTH CAROLINA."                                      

INFORMATION REFERENCE RENEWING YOUR CDL LICENSE.

If you have a CDL drivers license, you CANNOT renew your license through the mail.  You must go to the HMV with a valid physical and also a form from us.  If your license is coming due and you haven't been contacted by The Transportation Office, please notify Sherri Linton and there is a way to save you the $15.00 fee.

IN-SERVICE AND YOUR YELLOW BUS PERMIT.

State School Bus Policy requires school bus drivers to complete (10) hours of school bus related in-service training annually. This training consists of (5) hours of State Department of Education required instructions and five (5) hours of district choice instructions. Drivers who fail  to meet the in-service requirements will not be issued a school bus certificate. THIS WILL MAKE THEM INELIGIBLE  TO OPERATE A STATE OWNED BUS DESPITE THE FACT THAT THEY MAY HAVE A VALID COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE. Note the below state policy:

"DRIVERS NOT MEETING THE REQUIRED TEN (10) HOURS OF ANNUAL IN-SERVICE TRAINING IN A GIVEN YEAR WILL HAVE UNTIL THE END OF THE FOLLOWING YEAR TO MEET THE IN-SERVICE REQUIREMENTS PROVIDED THEIR LICENSE REMAINS CURRENT. IF AFTER A SECOND CONSECUTIVE SCHOOL YEAR, A DRIVER POSSESSING A CURRENT DRIVERS' LICENSE FAILS TO OBTAIN THE REQUIRED NUMBER  OF IN-SERVICE CREDIT HOURS, THE DRIVER WILL BE DISQUALIFIED FROM DRIVING A STATE-OWNED SCHOOL BUS AND WILL BE REQUIRED TO RE-ENTER THE SCHOOL BUS TRAINING PROGRAM AS IF THEY WERE A NEW DRIVER.  After completing the twenty-hour classroom school bus driver-training course, passing the school bus driver portion of the commercial driver road skills test, and the physical performance test, the driver will be re-authorized to drive a state-owned school bus.
