Academically Gifted and Talented
The mission of Chesterfield County School District is to prepare all students to be productive citizens in a changing society by continuously improving and implementing educational processes with ongoing community support.
- Parents and Teachers can nominate students through the online nomination form.
- Once the nomination period is complete, our district team will determine those who meet the criteria to be screened.
- Students who do not qualify in 2nd grade are offered off-grade testing through 5 grade.
- Students identified in any other South Carolina school districts are eligible for services in Chesterfield County.

Students who meet the criteria in at least two out of three dimensions are eligible for gifted and talented services.
(A) Aptitude – To meet this dimension, students must score in the 96 percentile or higher for their composite score or must score in the 93rd percentile or higher in any of the subcategories. If they score in the 96 percentile overall, they do not need to meet any other dimension.
(B) Achievement – All students are given the Iowa test in 2 grade and are tested 3 times a year from 3 - 8 grade with iReady and once a year with SC Ready. To meet this dimension, students must score in the 94 percentile on English or Math on any of these tests.
(C) Performance – Students in grades 3-5 who meet either A or B will qualify for the PTA (Performance Task Assessment) which is an assessment they will take in February. For all other students grades 5-8, they can meet this dimension using their GPA (Must have at least 3 As and 1 B or 4 As to qualify).
Effective curriculum and instruction for gifted and talented students incorporates the following components:
- Goals that support mastery of core areas of learning.
- Challenging, meaningful content that exceeds state grade-level standards.
- Learning experiences organized around complex concepts, themes and issues.
- Instruction in communicating, problem solving and critical thinking that exceeds grade-level standards.
