What is Child Find?

Child Find is a component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) which requires states to identify, locate, and evaluate all children with disabilities ages 2 ½   who are in need of early intervention of educational services.

Chesterfield County Schools provide free developmental screenings for children between the ages of 2 ½ and 5 through the Child Find screening process.  A multidisciplinary team will meet with you and your child to complete screenings in these areas:

Hearing and Vision

Developmental Skills

Communication Skills

Following the screening process, the team will review the results with you and will provide recommendations.  Our team will schedule follow-up appointments for observations and/or evaluations and provide suggestions based on the child’s individual needs.

Who is eligible?

Parents, grandparents, teachers and caregivers who have a concern about their child in one or more of the following areas make make a referral:

• Communication
• Cognitive Ability
• Daily Living Skills
• Motor Skills
• Social/Emotional/Behavior
• Hearing
• Vision

What is the cost?

Recommended screenings, evaluations and/or services are provided at no cost to families with written permission from the parent or guardian.

How do I begin?

1.  Contact Tammy Nicholson at the Office of Special Education Services.
2. Attend the Child Find screening with your child and participate in the screenings and planning conference.
3. Attend future meetings to complete evaluations, discuss evaluation results and develop a plan to meet your child’s needs (if appropriate).
